The Pink Cake

I've been a little off lately. Not bored, but feeling very boring...which I think is much worse.
Being bored can be fixed by simply finding an activity, but being boring is much trickier to address.
Your senses have been cruelly dulled and no activity under the sun is appealing to you when you suffer from boring.
And certainly no creative thoughts flutter in and out which is the very worst part of all the business of being boring.
For example, It's been over a week since I posted anything here in my little corner of the interwebs. No matter how hard I thought about it (which admittedly wasn't very hard) nothing jumped out as interesting to post.
And still, nothing does. But in the interest of being transparent, I thought I would at least give an update to my whereabouts -the couch, half participating in a tea party where all the attendees are imaginary family members.
And state of mind. -Boring and distracted. (Well I am desperately trying to collect my thoughts, write them down, and be gracious in accepting the correction of a 3 year old for spilling my "tea" .)
But all is not lost. I made a pink cake today!
I almost never bake (as I don't enjoy it.) But the unusualness of the task, the delicious smell, and the cheerful color made it just the thing to do on a day like today. Isn't it cheerful? And sprinkles! I think nothing is quite so cheerful and frivolous as multi colored sprinkles.
I'm hoping that this is just what was needed to turn the tide of my silly doldrums, and put me into a more "sprinkles" state of mind.

PS- As mentioned earlier, my camera met with an unfortunate sippy cup-splosion in my bag, and was unceremoniously drowned. BUT  it has since rallied and comes back to us in spurts! (If I charge about every 10 minutes or so.)
And it was just about time. Although it's not the Queen's Choice, anymore moody instagrams and I think I was going to do something drastic.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Or as Greta says "Valentines-tines-times Day!"
I hope you all enjoyed the day, and felt so loved.
Besides Christmas and birthdays Kent and I don't usually give gifts to each other. But boy, did that boy knock this one out of the park!
He got me my dream-come-true espresso machine and a beautiful bunch of tulips this morning.  The prospect of hassling two small kids out the door, whenever I wanted a simple latte was becoming a daunting picture to me. So, problem solved! And Swooooon.
Now to brush up on my soy foam skills...

Adventures.

One of Greta's favorite things to do lately is to play under a tan knit afghan. She calls it our "house." It's not a very big house, and my legs usually don't get to play indoors.
But we have it all worked out. She puts the same two pillows on the floor by the front window, we sit on them, and we cover ourselves with the afghan.
Instantly we are transported to an outdoor camp site far away, and the light that shines in through the holes of the blanket are the stars - it is always "night."
After commenting on the pretty stars and how dark it is she will usually say something about how she wishes she had her torch. (This she got from watching Kipper the Dog, who being British, calls flashlights torches.)
Then she will open her hands like a book and say "Once Upon A time deep in the middle of the dark dark woods there was a...Huh! What was that? Let's have a look!" and she will peer out and say reassuringly "Oh, It's only Big Owl," and sometimes for drama she will add an ominous "Hoooo hooooo."
Then it's time to rest our heads and sleep (my favorite time, because it's basically just snuggling), then tea time, and then back again to reading the book in her hands and being startled by Big Owl.
When we tire of camping and Big Owl loses his spook then it's off to the moon. (Did I tell you our little house flies...kind of like an upside down magic carpet.) We say hi to the "Beep Beeps" that live on the moon, then on our way back home we stop by Paris to see Madeline and the Eiffel Tower, then lastly to Africa to see the animals.
This whole elaborate make believe runs something like a play and we go over it again and again.
(I'm pretty sure the parts with the Big Owl and the Beep Beeps are directly from some episode of Kipper.)
Finally when something truly pressing calls us back home, we throw off the blanket to find ourselves back in the living room and with the wildest dandelion hair imaginable.
Someday (probably soon) I'll forget all the little details of our afghan adventures. Because I know I've already forgotten so much of the sweet things she's done here and there when I'm too busy to take pictures or write them down.
But they are such good memories, aren't they?

Be my Valentine?

Greta got out her paint brushes this week and I got out my scissors, address book, and gold tape. Because there's nothing quite so sweet as being asked every so nicely to "Be Mine" with a made from scratch card.

Are you planning anything special for your sweetheart?

Have you met Marcel the Shell with Shoes On?

I haven't been so amused since I don't know when.

Miss Bennet and Mr. Darcy

Come see the love birds!
Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are making googly eyes at each other in my etsy shop. A deliciously romantic couple, just in time for Valentines Day!

"Elizabeth, having rather expected to affront him, was amazed at his gallantry; but there was a mixture of sweetness and archness in her manner which made it difficult for her to affront anybody; and Darcy had never been so bewitched by any woman as he was by her. He really believed, that were it not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger."

Author Bookmarks!

I have a fun new addition to the shop to announce!
For the next little while I will be including in each order a handsome little author bookmark created specially for my fellow bibliophiles on etsy.
Honk honk for bonus treats!

Ps- Unfortunately instagram doesn't do much to capture the fun crisp colors of these bookmarks. But alas, several weeks back we had a sippy cup 'splosion in my bag and my camera is no longer with us.
Things might look a little hipster around here for next little while until we get a new one.
